What is tissue engineering?
Every day, on average 17 people die due to lack of supply in organ transplant, however, tissue engineering can change that. Instead of waiting for a donor, scientist can grow replacement tissue for example skin, cartilage or piece of organ in the lab.
Using one sentence to conclude, “Tissue engineering is a field of science that combines biology, engineering, and medicine to create or repair human tissues and organs.”
The technology nowadays are capable of growing tissues, for example skin tissues for patients which has a skin burn, cartilages for repairing a joint and there might even be blood vessels implant in the future.
The process of tissue engineering are separated into 4 steps, extraction, expansion, preparation and implantation. The processes range around days to weeks depending on the development of the certain tissue and the time required to adaptapt in your body.
In the following pages you will understand the application, especially the IPS heart and the future trends in tissue engineering.
